One of the main questions I get is “How can I stay motivated to achieve my goals?” I’ve seen individuals feel defeated because goals were not achieved or felt pressured to complete their goals. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Creating meaningful goals can be straightforward and effective while boosting your confidence and wellbeing. Seek out the guidance of a medical professional to help get you started.
Here are 8 reasons you aren't reaching your goals
1) Not enough planning or forethought
Goals require small building blocks and reflection. Without having a plan, it can easily become confusing and hard to track all the hard work you’ve put into your goals.
2) No timeline
Give yourself enough time to accomplish the goal. I always encourage patients to give themselves anywhere from 2-4 weeks more than what they anticipated.
3) Life happens
Priorities can shift, health changes occur or a life event can alter your plan. Many of us have difficulty with self-compassion and feel things have to be done in one certain way. Learning how to adjust your expectations in a realistic manner and adapt are KEY in goal setting.
4) Not making it engaging
Goals should not be rigid. Make it something meaningful to you that will ENJOY doing.
5) Making your goals too lofty
You need to start small and build off that foundation. If you create a goal that’s too large, it’s hard to plan the steps to achieve it. Make weekly or bi-weekly goals that lead up to your larger goal.
6) Not rewarding yourself
Pat yourself on the back for all the hard work you put into your goals; reward yourself with something small and special to acknowledge it.
7) No accountability
My clinical experience and research has shown that sharing with your goals with close ones or a health care provider greatly helps maximize your adherence. Receiving support and positive reinforcement makes a HUGE DIFFERENCE. You can also get some great advice and tips to help you on your journey.
8) Not achieving goals in your style
Everyone has different methods of achieving their goals; some like a little competition, others like to write everything down, listening to inspiring podcasts etc. Figure out what your style is and how to make it work for you.
